To answer this question, I must explain what I am referring to so we are all on the same page. GDADGB is the tuning I use on my baritone instrument. Those letters are the tuning of the strings, starting from the low thickest string to the thinnest one. For ease of reference, I just call it “The Bernhard Tuning.”
I designed this tuning with 3 goals in mind: 1) I wanted something deep and dark that was more bass-like yet can be easily played like a guitar, 2) I wanted something that would be just a one finger chord affair on the low strings similar to a “dropped D” tuning (look it up if you’re not familiar, it’s a popular tuning), and 3) I wanted to keep the higher strings close to what a standard guitar has to make playing that range a lot easier. This tuning checks all the boxes for me.
I have yet to use it on a release, but I am working on material for it. I’ve had to take it easy for the past 2 weeks due to health reasons. But I plan on continuing writing that material to record later ASAP.
In case you are interested in giving the Bernhard tuning a try, the only real modification that needed to be done was to file the string slots in the nut so that they could accommodate thicker strings, lowered the pickup a little, adjusted the action as needed, and put on baritone strings. If you have a spare guitar laying around and the time and resources, give it a try. I would love to hear what people come up with playing it.
