There’s a bit of misinformation floating out there about this song, so here is the definitive answer as to the meaning of “Buckle Up.” You’re not going to like this, but it means whatever the listener wants it to mean. Maybe it’s a song about solidarity. Or maybe it’s about making it through another semester of school. Whatever.
Now, my intent when writing” this “Buckle Up” was to be a tribute to the people of Ukraine, as the 2022 invasion had just started. So, to me, it is a dedication and a wish for victory for Ukraine.
Why did I decide to dedicate it to them? I’ll explain:
My maternal grandfather, Meyer, and his family were essentially exiled from their home in the Jewish enclave of Bershad (also spelled Berchad). They left there in 1914, just prior to the Bolshevik Revolution, and a massacre of dozens (over 100) Jews in the city they just fled.
I may have distant relatives over there, and they may be dying for their homeland. I don’t know. I never had the opportunity to meet my grandfather, as he died in November 1976 off of the coast of Florida. That was 2 months after I was born in Mt. Vernon, NY.
So, that is the song “Buckle Up” in a nutshell. Lyrics are below.
You might wanna buckle up
It’s going to be a hard ride
You just have to suck it up
I’ll see you on the other side
This is about to get real
This is about to get real
Buckle up, buckle up
Buckle up, buckle up
Buckle up, buckle up
Buckle up, buckle up
Buckle up, buckle up
Buckle up, buckle up
Buckle up, buckle up
Buckle up, buckle up
