You know, I am the sort of person who uses humor to attempt to defuse tension and reduce anxiety, and this is an example of just that. You see (that’s a pun that’ll become apparent soon), the other day I started having some trouble with my right eye, and now I lost vision in the lower half of that eye.
(I felt that the eyeball on the cover image was fitting.)
I went to the ER, and left with a guess-timation for what it might be, but nothing definitive. And their guess didn’t necessarily hold up. They diagnosed it as a condition called amaurosis fugax, which is a temporary blindness – seconds to minutes, and rarely longer than an hour – that is often indicative of cerebrovascular issues. This has lasted days, so that doesn’t seem to be the case.
I still need to get into a real specialist, and I will attempt to do so on the Monday after I post this (today is Sunday, December 14, 2025). In the meantime, I am taking a break from drumming for now, just in case.
***Update*** 12/16/2025 Got to the eyeball urgent care shortly after they opened. It was diagnosed as a condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemia of the optic nerve (NAION for short). In all likelihood, the vision that I had lost will be permanent. I was also told that I had no activity restrictions, so at least I can drum again. I’ll take any small victory at this point***
***UPDATE AGAIN!!!***01/01/2026 My entire eye is affected now. It’s not entire blindness, but more like pixelated thick smoke. This experience is both fascinating (understanding what blindness is like) and terrifying (understanding what blindness is like).***
I won’t lie, this is kind of scary. But, I also know that my body has been ruined and things will happen as I get older. Coincidentally, my father was blind in an eye, as well.
Anyway, this was just a post to vent. It really serves no other purpose than for me to release some of that anxiety to hopefully decrease the amount that I feel. We’ll see if it works. No one reads these anyway, so it’s basically just soothing self-talk.
Anyway, be safe out there. And do wear your sunglasses at night, just like what Corey Hart instructed.
