Look, I’ll keep this brief, and I recommend reading the article at this link. The long and short of it is that Spotify has a policy where if a track does not reach 1000 streams in a year, then that artist will not be compensated for their work AT ALL. Well, a thousand streams shouldn’t be a problem, right? Well, roughly 60% of the tracks on Spotify do not reach that milestone, and many of them are going to be the niche artists. They often create the art that bucks the trends and are the ones who will forgo popularity for musical honesty.

Essentially, my opinion is that when someone listens to Spotify, they are listening to theft happening. Those artists like me who get under that count get nothing, even if I were to have 999 streams at the end of the period. Whether it is 5 cents or $500, it belongs to the artist who made it.

Therefore last October or so, I had removed my music from Spotify. That service is possibly the biggest source of exposure out of all of the competition, but I would rather get no exposure than to be ripped off. I already operate at a loss of a couple thousand, and I will never recoup that. So what I do earn shouldn’t go to Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny, as I need it more than them.

Click on the Bandcamp or Youtube links at the top, and screw Spotify. Or check us out on basically any other streaming service out there. You just won’t find our music on Spotify until their unfair compensation policies change.

For the record, almost all of the service pay less than a penny per stream. Often, in the hundredths or thousandths of a cent (see the image above).
